"Caring for the Community"

The City of Miramar operates two senior centers designed for those who are sixty-five years old or older.  The Sunset Lakes Senior Center is in West Miramar, while the senior center in the Multi-Service Complex is in East Miramar.  Both centers offer a wide array of services such as counseling and support groups, information and referral, health and wellness, recreational activities and even a hot lunch provided by Broward Meals on Wheels.

Independence Day Celebration

July 2nd at Multi-Service Complex & Sunset Lakes
Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Join in the festivities as we celebrate.


Tropical Night Dance

Friday, July 16th at Multi-Service Complex, 6:00 p.m.
$10 members/$12 non-members
Sit back and picture sunny beaches, blue skies, the sound of a gentle surf crashing in the distance and percussive steel drums. Enjoy the tastes, smells and music of the islands at our Tropical Nights Dance party. Tropical and bright colored clothing are a must. Dreadlock wigs are optional, but a big plus!

Our Senior Citizen Picnic is a special day to celebrate our seniors and recognize their active, healthy and independent lives.

Transportation for Seniors

Seniors Cruise

The Social Services Department operates a senior demand-response transportation program for individuals over the age of 60. This includes transportation to Miramar’s senior centers, grocery stores, medical appointments, and various recreational trips. The service is door-to-door and is wheelchair accessible. The service is limited and is by reservation only.

Senior Disaster Checklist
Supplies to have in your home
These supplies will be necessary even if you plan to evacuate your home, as you may return to your home before water and electric are restored.

First Aid Kit

Flashlights and extra batteries

Battery operated radio and extra batteries

Matches in a waterproof container

A month’s supply of all medications. Buy extra each time the prescription is filled until you have enough for a month

Sanitary/Continence supplies

Personal care items

Non-electric can opener

Soap and detergent

Empty milk jugs or other plastic containers which may be filled with water. Allow one (1) gallon of water per person per day. A two week supply of water is suggested.

Toilet paper, paper towels and tissues

Rubber gloves

Insect repellant/sunscreen

Protective clothing and hat

Bleach without additives

Large and small trash bags

Non-perishable foods

Disposable eating utensils

Non-electric stove

SUGGESTED FOODS TO STOCK

Some of these foods may not be appropriate for all diets. If you have special nutritional needs, be sure to read the ingredients and have the proper foods on hand. Try to accumulate a two-week supply of food and water. All foods should be shelf stable and non-perishable. Single-serve items are preferred. Purchase the food over a period of time to spread the cost.

HURRICANE SUITCASE

Prepare a suitcase, box or any other container and have it ready for a hurricane. If you evacuate to a shelter you will need to take the following items in a prepared Hurricane Suitcase. If possible, take a lawn chair or cot.

Change of clothes

Important papers (Insurance policies, Medicare/Medicaid card, birth certificates, phone numbers, addresses of relatives and any other important papers) in a watertight container.

All of your medication

Personal care items such as soap, toiletries, towels, insect repellant, sunscreen, etc.

Hurricane meals or other non-perishable foods.

Pillow & blanket

Sturdy shoes

Fill up your car with gas

Fasten all doors and shutters

Lower all blinds and close curtains

Pick up all objects from your yard and store inside

Sanitize bathtub and fill with water; if possible seal the drain

Fill clean containers with water for drinking

Turn freezer and refrigerator to maximum

Fill freezer with containers of water. Do not put glass bottles with water in the freezer

If you have storm shutters or awnings, secure them

Pack hurricane suitcase


IF YOU LEAVE YOUR HOME IF YOU STAY IN YOUR HOME

Shut off electricity at the main fuse or breaker

Shut off gas supply at the outside source

Lock all doors and windows. Tape windows if you do not have storm shutters

Leave the phone number & address of your destination posted prominently on an interior wall

Try to leave during the daylight hours

If you are going to a shelter, do not take your pets

Take your hurricane suitcase

Tell someone where you are going, either a family member, friend, neighbor or Senior Center

IF YOU HAVE AN ALTERNATIVE YOU MAY NOT WANT TO WEATHER THE STORM ALONE. IF YOU LIVE IN AN EVACUATION ZONE OR A MOBILE HOME YOU MUST EVACUATE.

  • During a storm do not go outside
  • Stay away from glass doors and windows
  • Listen to a local radio station for informational updates
  • Do not use candles as a light source
  • Do not use any tap water until given the all-clear from local authorities
  • Call a friend, family member or neighbor after the disaster if you have phone service
  • Place items needed in Hurricane Suitcase in trash bags or a large plastic container

bullet How soon can I get transportation to come to the Senior Center?

There are a variety of transportation options to get you to and from the senior centers including our senior center buses, the Broward County TOPS programs, the Miramar shuttle buses or you can have a friend or family member drop you off and pick you up. The length of time it takes to make transportation arrangements depends on which type of transportation you need.

bullet Why do you need my Social Security number?

The Miramar Senior Center is collecting your Social Security number as part of its responsibility to conduct assessments. We do this to determine benefits or services for you. Your Social Security Number is confidential under law and will be kept confidential.

bulletHow do I make a transportation reservation to go grocery shopping, to the doctor or to go on a recreational trip?

It's easy to make transportation reservations. Once you are a member of one of our senior centers, you can call the Transportation Clerk at (954) 889-2711 for grocery shopping and doctor appointments. Recreational trips must be signed up for in person at one of the senior centers.

bullet How do I register for the senior programs?

Call the Multi-Service Complex Senior Center at 954-889-2705 or Sunset Lakes Senior Center at 954-602-3347 to make an appointment to register.
