Youth & Family Outreach Center

The Social Services Department’s Youth and Family Outreach Program proudly serves City of Miramar residents of all ages.

We believe that providing the community with proper information, preventive education and access to social service resources is vital in maintaining self-sufficiency and empowering individuals to improve the quality of their lives.

This Program provides YOU with a "one-stop shop" for finding information regarding services in Broward County available for youth, children, seniors, persons with disabilities and families.

Assistance Programs

Free and Reduced Price Meals
Listed below are flyers in multiple languages, encouraging families to apply online early for free and reduced price meal benefits for school children. Children may use this benefit to eat both breakfast and lunch at the school cafeteria each day. In today's tough economic times, many families need this benefit. During the 2009-10 School Year, over 50% of the students in Broward County Public Schools were eligible for Free or Reduced Price school meals.

Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program (EHEAP)
The EHEAP program can provide assistance with final notice Florida Power and Light electric bills and/or may provide assistance in the form of a fan or blanket. This program is for income eligible persons over the age of sixty. Proof of income and energy emergency are required. Limited funds are available for this program.

Miramar Assisting Seniors in their Homes Program (MASH)
The MASH program is a short term emergency assistance program designed to alleviate a crisis. This program is for income eligible persons over the age of sixty who reside in the City of Miramar. Proof of income and crisis situation is required. Limited funds are available for this program.

Farm Share Food Distribution Program
The Farm Share Food Distribution Program provides food for income eligible persons. Farm Share food is distributed every two months. To receive food, persons must pre-register. Registration is not available on the day of food distribution. In order to qualify, individuals must provide household income verification. This is not intended as a primary food source rather it provides supplemental food.

DCF Benefit Online Application Assistance
In the past, clients that were interested in public assistance had to report directly to the Department of Children and Families’ offices, fill out an application, wait for an appointment via mail and later wait for an eligibility determination. In order to improve service to the community, DCF has partnered with different community agencies.  The city of Miramar’s Social Services Department currently is one of DCF’s community partners. At the Youth and Family Outreach Center you are able to apply for food stamps, temporary cash, Medicaid and refugee assistance electronically with the help of our courteous staff.

Work Force One Kiosk
The City of Miramar’s Social Services Department has partnered with Work Force One to provide the community with access to job listings and training.  At our very own Youth and Family Outreach Center, Miramar residents can access a Work Force One Kiosk, where individuals can view job listings for the tri-county area.  In addition, our helpful staff will assist with the job hunting process.  Please call (954) 889-2700 to schedule an appointment.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)
Rules to Claim EITC Credit...

  • Must work and have earned income
  • Must have valid Social Security Number
  • Must be a US citizen or resident alien all year
  • Cannot use “married filing separately” filing status
  • Cannot be a qualifying child of another person
  • Cannot  File form 2555 or 2555EZ

Free Income Tax Assistance is available through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) for low to moderate income tax payers at the Social Services Department Youth and Family Outreach Center during tax season. You may be eligible to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit EITC. A tax credit usually means more money in your pocket; the EITC can reduce the amount of tax you owe and you may also get a refund

Earned Income must be less than…

  • $12,590 with no qualifying child ($14,590 if married filing jointly)
  • $33,241 with one qualifying child ($35,241 if married filing jointly)
  • $37,783 with more than one qualifying child ($39,783 if married filing jointly) 

The City of Miramar Social Services Department has partnered with the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice to bring services to our community through their youth diversion programs. 
Youth that are on probation must complete court ordered sanctions and services.  At the Youth and Family Outreach Center, a probation officer will be on site to counsel and monitor compliance for youth who are currently on probation. As they stay connected with the community a juvenile will receive services that will improve the quality of their lives as well as deter them from future offenses.

Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County, Inc provides services to pregnant women, teens and families through pre-natal care access, educational programs, support groups and advocacy. Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies is currently serving our community at the Multi-Service Complex every Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Harmony Development Center provides services to at risk youth and their families in order to prevent violence, criminal behavior and victimization through educational programs, support groups and community involvement. Harmony is serving the City of Miramar at the Multi-Service Complex, Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for individual counseling and Mondays and Tuesdays from 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. for group counseling services. Family Central provides access to school readiness programs and VPK as well as information and referrals. You can now have access to Family Central services at the Multi Service Complex, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, please call 954-889-2700.

With our new Prescription Discount Card!

The City of Miramar has a new program to offer savings on prescription drugs to residents who are without health insurance, a traditional benefits plan, or have prescriptions that are not covered by insurance.
The Prescription Discount Card is made available to residents by the City of Miramar in collaboration with the National League of Cities (NLC) and is made possible through the City of Miramar’s membership in NLC.

The card is FREE to all Miramar residents, regardless of age, income or existing health insurance. By using this card you may save an average of 20% off the regular retail price of prescription drugs at participating pharmacies.

The Social Services Department is able to meet emergency food needs to Miramar residents via our own food bank.  Non perishable foods are distributed to Miramar residents with crisis situations. The Miramar Food Bank is also actively accepting donations all year round.

The Social Services Department is able to provide counseling services to City of Miramar residents through our very own Social Worker.  Individual counseling and group counseling is available at the senior centers for seniors over the age of 60 and their families.  In addition, the Youth and Family Outreach Center has partnered with Spectrum Programs to provide in depth counseling to our residents.  Through our qualified staff and community partnerships, the Social Services Department is able to meet your counseling needs.  For more information and to schedule an appointment, please call 954-889-2723.
