Mission: Effectively and efficiently manage all emergency preparedness program areas within the City of Miramar to implement comprehensive disaster planning, mitigation, response and recovery activities.

Vision: Be a leader in the field of municipal emergency management, protecting the lives and property of the residents of the City of Miramar through innovative and integrated program management and execution.   

	Mitigation Mitigation refers to measures that prevent an emergency, reduce the chance of an emergency happening, or reduce the damaging effects of unavoidable emergencies. Typical mitigation measures include establishing building codes and zoning requirements, installing shutters, and constructing barriers such as levees.
	Preparedness Preparedness activities increase a community’s ability to respond to a disaster when it occurs.  Typical preparedness measures include developing mutual aid agreements and memorandums of understanding, training for both response personnel and concerned citizens, conducting disaster exercises to reinforce training and test capabilities, and presenting all-hazards education campaigns.
	Response Actions carried out immediately before, during, and immediately after a hazard impact, which are aimed at saving lives, reducing economic losses, and alleviating suffering. Response actions may include activating the emergency operations center, evacuating threatened populations, opening shelters and providing mass care, emergency rescue and medical care, fire fighting, and urban search and rescue.
	Recovery  Actions taken to return a community to normal or near-normal conditions, including the restoration of basic services and the repair of physical, social and economic damages.  Typical recovery actions include debris cleanup, financial assistance to individuals and governments, rebuilding of roads and bridges and key facilities, and sustained mass care for displaced human and animal populations.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate today addressed members of the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) attending their 2009 Mid-Year Meeting at FEMA's Emergency Management Institute in Emmitsburg, Md. "As emergency managers we must continue to make sure that preparedness, and especially the preparedness of the public, is a top priority," Fugate said. "What we do now to increase the preparedness of the public, who are a vital member of the emergency response team, will go a long way in increasing our success in responding to and recovering from the next disaster."

Swine Flu Information

The City of Miramar Division of Emergency Management is closely monitoring the national Public Health Alert and reviewing information as provided by the local, State and Federal public health authorities. We are posting some information on our web page concerning this Public Health Alert for your reference and precaution. The Broward County Health Department 24 hour information hotline is 954-467-4700 for any further questions on the Swine Flu.

The Florida Department of Health has set up a Swine Flu Information Line that gives information regarding precautions to take to avoid getting the flu, symptoms, how the disease is spread, and what the DOH is doing to protect its visitors and residents.
